Why is it needed?
Most patients prefer to stay in the comfort of their own homes for as long as they can. But their needs can change rapidly towards the end of life. To help them avoid hospital admission they need a range of clinical and other services – a one-stop support centre.
With diagnostic facilities and specialist input from the James Paget University Hospital on the doorstep, the Centre will offer first-class clinical care involving palliative care doctors, Macmillan nurses, physiotherapists and occupational therapy. Family support workers will be at hand to help with social care, financial shortfalls and benefits. Trained volunteers will be there for patients and their loved ones and listen to their feelings and concerns. Complementary therapy practitioners will offer acupuncture, reflexology and aromatherapy. Above all, these services will be provided in a calm and comforting environment, where the most important thing we have to offer is our time.
